What to Pack for a Zion National Park Trip: The Honest Packing Guide

Most Zion packing lists tell you to bring sunscreen and hiking boots. True, but not the whole picture. Here is what actually makes a difference.
For the trails: Proper hiking shoes or trail runners are essential. Sneakers on Angels Landing or the Narrows is a choice you will regret. Trekking poles for anything technical. A hydration pack rather than a single water bottle. Sun protection for your face, neck, and the tops of your hands, which get more sun than you think on exposed trails.
For The Narrows specifically: Neoprene socks and water shoes if you are renting gear in town, or your own equivalent. A dry bag for your phone. A waterproof layer for cool mornings when the river is cold.
For evenings at Zion Red Rock: This is the part most packing lists skip. Bring a light layer for the hot tub after dark, the evenings cool down faster than expected in the desert. Comfortable shoes for walking the labyrinth. Binoculars for the kind of stargazing that makes you wish you had them every night of your regular life.
Things most people forget: A headlamp for early starts. Moleskin for blisters on longer trails. A good camera or a clean phone lens because Zion rewards the prepared photographer at every turn.
Pack for the canyon, but also pack for the evenings. Some of the best Zion memories happen after you are back at the property.
